Cosmetic dentistry is a combination of art and function, and it helps to improve the appearance of your teeth at the same time maintaining long term dental health. Healthy teeth are also necessary for the purpose of chewing and speaking coherently.
Cosmetic Dentistry includes brightening of teeth, whitening of yellow teeth, closing ugly gaps between teeth, repairing of chipped or broken teeth, dull teeth, covering already existing metal fillings, straightening crooked teeth, and more are all inclusive in cosmetic dentistry. Why should unpleasant or unhealthy teeth hinder you from smiling confidently? Considering factors like age, sex and facial measurements, the cosmetic dentist will create a smile that best suits the patient. Each individual has his/her individual smile.
Cosmetic Dentistry is a discipline within dentistry in which the main focus is the changes in the appearance of a patient's oral cavity and structures around it. Keep in mind the prevention and treatment of any other oral disease. Through Cosmetic Dentistry, the appearance of the mouth can be metamorphosed according to the patient's perception of what is visually pleasing.
Dentistry, in general is based on oral hygiene and preventing, locating and then curing any mouth related disease. Cosmetic Dentistry whereas primarily aims at upgrading the look of a person's teeth, mouth and smile. It also helps to restore damaged and decayed teeth. Initially, dental fillings were used to treat decayed teeth. These fillings were mainly made of gold, amalgam and other materials often leaving ugly black marks on the teeth. Dental fillings in Cosmetic Dentistry are made of porcelain or composite materials that are quite identical to the color of your teeth, thus not making it look different from the rest of your teeth.
These tooth colored materials are attached to the tooth with certain resin adhesives. These materials are free from mercury unlike the silver fillings (amalgams). Patients often decide to replace their old fillings with these new advanced colored fillings to upgrade the appearance of their teeth and smile. Cosmetic Dentistry poses a wide range of challenges for the dentists owing to technological advancements. These latest developments in cosmetic dentistry are smile makeovers and full mouth reconstruction.
Cosmetic Dentistry procedures include:
-Whitening or tooth bleaching is the most common procedure. In this procedure the dentists implement treatments for discolored teeth.
-Enamel shaping-. It may be used to cover up a small chip in the tooth. The removed enamel is irreplaceable and may sometimes expose dentin. It may also be named as enameloplasty, Odontoplasty, recon touring, reshaping, slenderizing and stripping.
-Bonding is practiced for repairing chipped or cracked teeth. It is a procedure where enamel- like dental composite material is applied to a tooth's surface, molded into shape, hardened and then polished.
- Gum lift is a procedure in cosmetic dentistry that raises and beautifies the gum line. The procedure involves refurbishing the tissue and the underlying bones to create the appearance of more well lined teeth.
