Researchers from the University of Alberta believe they have found a method of regrowing teeth and possibly bone that have been broken. The scientists use a miniaturized low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) system-on-a-chip which offers a non-invasive and novel way to stimulate jaw growth and dental tissue healing.Dr. Tarak El-Bialy from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and Dr. Jie Chen and Dr. Ying Tsui from the Faculty of Engineering developed a tiny wireless ultrasound transducer device that comfortably fits inside the patient’s mouth while packed in biocompatible materials. The device is mounted on an orthodontic or “braces” bracket or even a plastic removable crown. The team also designed an energy sensor that will ensure the LIPUS power is reaching the target area of the teeth roots within the bone.Dr. Chen says “It’s very exciting because we have shown the results and actually have something you can touch and feel that will impact the health of people in Canada and throughout the world.” Chen works out of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the National Institute for Nanotechnology. The technology has already been patented, and they hope they will have the system-on-a-chip finished to complete the miniaturized device by next year. El-Bialy says “If the root is broken, it can now be fixed. And because we can regrow the teeth root, a patient could have his own tooth rather than foreign objects in his mouth.”The device is aimed at people experiencing dental root resorption, a common effect of mechanical or chemical injury to dental tissue caused by diseases and endocrine disturbances. The market potential in the US alone is 1.4 million. The device was first tested on rabbits. After positive results the scientists moved onto humans and found similar results. They have also shown that LIPUS can improve jaw growth in cases with hemifacial microsomia, a congenital syndrome where one side of the child’s jaw or face is underdeveloped compared to the other “normal” side.Usually these patients undergo many surgeries to improve their facial appearance. The work on human patients was presented at the World Federation of Orthodontics in Paris, September 2005.Source: Dental Scientists Use Ultrasound To Regrow Teeth And Bone - A Broken Tooth Can Be Re-Grown In One YearPrevious Posts:Teeth Bonding & Dental FillingsRelation Between Porcelain Veneers & Tooth CavityInternet Marketing, Dental Web Marketing & Website DesignDental Implants: Teeth Loss TreatmentDental Implants & Dental Dentures
Teeth bonding can correct minor dental flaws in one quick and easy procedure. It is sometimes used instead of porcelain veneers. Today’s bonding is tooth colored and produces beautiful results. It can be used to fill small holes, seal and protect your teeth, and to correct cosmetic flaws. What is bonding?Bonding refers to the substance used and to the procedure itself. Bonding material is a tooth colored paste. Your cosmetic dentist applies the bonding and shapes it while it is still soft. It can be sculpted and more can be added until just the right shape is achieved. Then it is hardened with a special light. What is bonding used for?Bonding can be used to create small, tooth-colored fillings for cavities.Cracks and tooth erosion can be covered and sealed. Cracks and erosion can cause pain and sensitivity, tooth decay, and discoloration. Bonding restores the beauty and comfort of your smile, while protecting your teeth from further damage.Bonding can be used to cover correct the look of small chips. Small gaps between your teeth can be filled by building up the surrounding teeth to close the gap.The look of crooked and misshapen teeth can be corrected with bonding, by sculpting a new shape onto your teeth. Discoloration that is resistant to whitening can be covered.Dental bonding vs. porcelain veneersDental bonding and porcelain veneers can be used to correct many of the same problems. There are advantages and disadvantages to choosing bonding over veneers. The advantages of bonding include:Bonding gives you faster results than veneers; bonding only requires one visit, veneers require two.Bonding is less expensive than veneers.Sometimes, bonding can be used to build up a larger portion of your tooth than veneers. There are also some disadvantages to bonding:Your bonding will match the color of your natural teeth and restore the beauty of your teeth, but it is not quite as beautiful and natural looking as veneers.Bonding is not as stain resistant as veneers, so you have to be more careful about what you eat and drink to minimize discoloration over time, just like you do with your natural tooth enamel. At home you will care for your teeth just like you always have with bonding, but when you have your teeth professionally cleaned you will need to see a hygienist who has experience with bonding or your bonding could be damaged.Fillings:Dental bonding can be used to create fillings for small holes in your teeth in one quick office visit. For larger areas of decay, your cosmetic dentist may recommend porcelain inlays or onlays. Inlays and onlays are created in a lab, so they require two office visits. The results, however are beautiful, blend seamlessly with your tooth, and strengthen your tooth.Source: Teeth BondingPrevious Posts:Relation Between Porcelain Veneers & Tooth CavityDental Implants: Teeth Loss TreatmentDental Website Marketing, Internet Marketing & Web DesignDental Implants & Dental DenturesEnamel Stripping & Teeth Discoloration
Unlike sharks, humans do not have a near-infinite supply of teeth constantly growing in. Nor do we have constantly-growing incisors like rodents. Instead, we are issued a finite supply of teeth, and when they're gone, that's it. Once one tooth is gone, others can drift, crowd, and come out of alignment. The jawbone can decay, making it fragile and susceptible to breakage. It can look very unattractive, and the functions of the mouth, including chewing and speaking, can be affected.Fortunately, cosmetic dentists have a number of solutions that are both aesthetic and functional to remedy the loss of teeth. The Old War Horse:With the exception of cosmetic bridges wired into the mouths of corpses following death, dentures were the first treatment for lost teeth. Dentures are prostheses that fit in the mouth, with one or more ponitcs (false teeth) that fill the spaces left by lost teeth. Dentures can be full or partial, and either top or bottom. Dentures can be a reasonable cosmetic and functional appliance, if well-made, but they can also be a poor solution for the problem of missing teeth, as they sometimes fit uncomfortably and are not fastened to the jaw, so they can slide out of place.Fully-Functional Appliance:Modern dental bridges are a fully-functional, highly cosmetic solution to the problem of missing teeth. In a dental bridge, the pontic (or pontics, though bridges are rarely recommended for very many teeth) are fastened to a neighboring tooth or neighboring teeth. This can be done either by modifying the supporting teeth with a dental crown, or it can be done using dental bonding that bond the pontic directly to the other teeth.Bridges are near-perfect prostheses from both a functional and a cosmetic standpoint. Their only problem comes if bacteria begins to collect under the pontic as a result of poor oral hygiene. Their dependence on other teeth can also be a drawback, because they either require neighboring teeth to be modified with crowns, or if directly bonded they can fail if a neighboring tooth fails.High-Tech Solution:A dental implant goes even further toward a high-functioning and highly attractive prosthetic. In fact, a dental implant functions like the root of the tooth, and the crown on top is a fully-functioning tooth for all intents and purposes. Once a dental implant has been integrated into the jawbone, it requires no special treatment, and in most cases it will function as well or better than your natural teeth. If you require many or all your teeth to be replaced in either arch, you can consider a system like Nobel's All-on-4 system, in which an entire arch of teeth is anchored using four implants into the jaw.Although there are many ways to avoid the negative effects of missing teeth, the crown jewel is the dental implant.

Dental crowns can provide you with a great option for repairing damage done to your teeth. The following questions are commonly asked to cosmetic dentists by patients at their initial dental crown consultation:What are dental crowns?A dental crown, also known as a dental cap, is used to cover a damaged tooth and restore the tooth's strength and durability. Dental crowns cover the entire portion of the tooth visible above the gum line. This is different from a filling which only covers a portion of the visible part of a tooth. Why would I need a dental crown? There are many reasons why a dentist would recommend a crown including:- Cracked teeth
- Fractured teeth
- An anchor is needed for a dental bridge to replace a missing tooth
- To cover a tooth that has had a root canal
- Fragile teeth
- Cosmetic purposes
A crown can fix a tooth that is misshapen or discolored. If you have been unhappy about the way a tooth looks, then a crown could be the answer to your problem. How does a dentist make a dental crown?A dentist creates a dental crown over the course of two dental appointments. During the first appointment, he will remove most of the outside surface of the tooth which will later be replaced by the crown. This is known as shaping the tooth. Once the tooth is shaped, the dentist will take several impressions of the tooth and other areas of the mouth. These impressions are sent to a dental technician who uses them to make a perfect fitting permanent crown. At the end of your first appointment, the dentist will attach a temporary crown to your tooth. During the second appointment, the dentist will attach the permanent crown to your tooth. Is it painful to get a dental crown?Getting a crown is a relatively painless procedure. The dentist uses a local anesthetic to numb the areas of the mouth being treated. What are the different types of crowns? There are three different types of crowns. They are:- Gold Crown
- Porcelain Crown
- Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crown
Which crown is right for me?This is a question for your dentist to answer. When you schedule a consultation visit, your dentist will discuss the various costs associated with a crown, the best type of crown for you, and also financing options.Source: Questions about Dental CrownsPrevious Posts:Dental Implants & Dental DenturesEnamel Stripping & Teeth DiscolorationDental Website Markeing & Dental Website DesignTooth Ache & Anti-Snoring TreatmentRoot Canal & Endodontics Treatment
How do you know what is best for you and your future? Cosmetic dentures or dental implants both solve the same problem: fixing your missing teeth. You need to look at the big picture.Cosmetic Dentures:Cosmetic dentures are simply replacements of missing teeth. The false teeth can replace all the upper teeth or all the lower teeth (known as full dentures), or parts where groups of teeth are missing (called partials). The prosthetic teeth can be made from plastic or even porcelain. Today’s cosmetic dentures not only function, but also look aesthetically pleasing.Cosmetic dentures are removable, nonpermanent structures which use denture adhesive to keep them in place during the day. You remove them and clean them at night.Dental Implants:By contrast, dental implants are a permanent solution to the problem of missing teeth. They are attached to the jawbone by the use of implanted anchors. The anchor sits below the gum line.Titanium posts are attached to the anchors. These posts function like the teeth roots. They sit above the gum line. Finally, a prosthetic tooth crown is attached on top of the post.Because the implant is made of titanium, it integrates with the jawbone (called osseointegration), forming a functional and structural bond that can withstand the high-stress force that chewing creates.Advantages of Dental Implants over Cosmetic Dentures:When comparing cosmetic dentures and dental implants, dental implants are the preferred solution because they have several advantages:- Aesthetics – dental implants are the closest thing to your natural teeth because they are anchored in your mouth in a duplication of the way your natural teeth are anchored in, so they look, act, and feel like the real thing.
- Confidence – dental implants look and feel like your natural teeth so they make you feel confident because you feel natural. They also don’t impede speech because they fit in your mouth the same as your natural teeth do.
- Facial stability – because dental implants provide the same support for your face as natural teeth, they can reduce or eliminate wrinkles that you may have gotten when teeth were missing. Also, they stabilize the face by holding it up so it doesn’t appear sunken. It’s almost like a face lift because sunken faces make people look much older then they actually are.
- Functionality – dental implants improve your ability to chew food because they can withstand almost as much biting and chewing force as natural teeth
- No teeth are sacrificed – dentures may require some teeth to be pulled, and partial dentures may use neighboring teeth as anchors, thus necessitating that some of those teeth be altered to support the partial denture
- Reliability - since dental implants look and function just like natural teeth, they offer you the ability to relax and feel more confident without worrying whether they will fall out. You just care for them like your natural teeth. You don’t need special cleaners or adhesives.
When looking into dental implants or cosmetic dentures, look for a cosmetic dentist that offers both accuracy and precision in both the diagnosis of missing teeth as well as the treatment solution. The combination of these tools allows him to completely envision the placement of your implants in a realistic, three-dimensional setting and create a surgical map which guides him in placing the dental implants.Cosmetic dentures can look very good when they are designed correctly. However, when looking at the big picture, you can see that dental implants are the preferred treatment because of their advantages over cosmetic dentures.Source: Cosmetic Dentures or Dental ImplantsPrevious Posts:Enamel Stripping & Teeth DiscolorationTooth Ache & Anti-Snoring TreatmentDental Web Markeing & Dentist Website DesignRoot Canal & Endodontics TreatmentOral Cancer & Smoking
Latest Dental News: Enamel StrippingSome amount of dulling and darkening of your teeth is just a natural part of aging. What we eat and drink and how we care for our teeth will affect how much staining and discoloration occurs on the outside of our teeth. Other factors, some beyond our control, can cause teeth to stain on the inside. Most staining can be corrected with tooth whitening. Stubborn, resistant discoloration can be covered with other procedures, giving you beautiful, white teeth again.Aging:As we age, the enamel of our teeth thins. When the enamel thins the dentin shows through. Dentin is yellow and as it becomes more visible your teeth lose their bright whiteness. Brushing and good oral hygiene cannot stop the dulling of your teeth caused by aging. Tooth whitening can reach and lighten the dentin.Darkening on the outside of your teeth:Staining on the outside of your teeth is called extrinsic staining. This is the type of darkening that you have the most control over. Your personal habits play a large role in extrinsic staining, but are not the only factor.Proper brushing and flossing will minimize this type of staining. However, that doesn’t mean you should go crazy with aggressive brushing and using abrasive products. If you damage your tooth enamel your teeth will stain more easily.Obviously, what you put in your mouth can stain your teeth. Staining foods and beverages include dark berries, coffee, tea, sodas, and red wine. Smoking and smokeless tobacco use will also stain your teeth.Dental damage such as chipped teeth and tooth erosion leave areas unprotected by tooth enamel and they can darken quickly. Tooth erosion can be caused by many things including drinking sodas. It is common in swimmers due to excessive exposure to chlorine.Metal (silver amalgam) fillings can become tarnished and stain your teeth. They can be replaced with beautiful, tooth-colored fillings.Darkening on the inside of your teeth:When your teeth become dark on the inside it is called intrinsic staining. This typically starts in childhood and is beyond your control. The most common cause of intrinsic staining is tetracycline use while your teeth were developing. Tetracycline is a very common antibiotic.Intrinsic staining:Staining inside of your teeth is called intrinsic staining. Intrinsic staining is very resistant to whitening. Your cosmetic dentist can determine if your teeth will respond to tooth whitening, and if not, he can recommend alternatives. Even if you have dark intrinsic staining, you can still have a beautiful, white smile. If you were exposed to excessive fluoride while your teeth were forming you may have white fleck and/or brown stains in your teeth due to dental fluorosis. Public water supplies often have added fluoride. You can help protect your children from dental fluorosis and the health risks of excessive fluoride by giving them bottled water or installing a high quality water filter in your home and having use fluoride-free toothpaste until they are at least three years old.An injury to a tooth can cause it to darken. This can happen very slowly after the trauma occurs. Some intrinsic stains respond to whitening, but in most cases you will need to cover the stained teeth with porcelain veneers or tooth bonding. Even the toughest stains can be covered giving you beautiful, white teeth again.Source: Why Do Teeth Darken?Previous Posts:Tooth Ache & Anti-Snoring TreatmentRoot Canal & Endodontics TreatmentDental Web Design: Dental Website MarketingOral Cancer & SmokingNatural Home Teeth Whitening Procedures
Latest Dental News: Anti-Snoring TreatmentAnyone who has ever suffered from a toothache knows how painful it can be. Does it seem that for some reason, toothaches most often strike on a weekend or late at night when you can’t get in touch with your dentist? What can be done to ease this pain when your dentist isn’t available? Most often, tooth decay, abscesses, impacted teeth, gum problems, or sometimes something as simple as a piece of food being lodged between the teeth can cause toothaches. Some diseases not associated with the mouth can also cause toothaches, such as heart disease, sinuses, and ear infections. Sometimes toothaches can simply be due to temporary sensitivity. Toothache pain can range from mild to severe. It is always a good idea to rinse your mouth with water and gently floss, in case a food particle is the culprit. In the event that this does not work, there are some other remedies to try to relieve your ache until you can consult a professional.Over-the-counter pain medication such as aspirin or Tylenol is available for short-term pain relief, as are antiseptics and gels. These things will numb the area. Your pharmacist can recommend different brands and explain what they do.Through the years, home remedies for toothaches have sprung up. These remedies can be either medicinal or herbal in nature. One of the most popular toothache remedies is clove oil. You can either use the liquid form or the actual clove. Rubbing clove oil on the tooth is believed to relieve the pain from a toothache. Clove oil contains eugenol, which is a natural pain killer and an antibacterial substance.Another remedy for toothaches is to mix lime juice and asafoetida powder. Asafoetida is a spice used in Indian cooking. Soak a cotton ball in this mixture and rub it on your tooth and gum. This will help to ease your pain. You can also try adding 1 tbsp of salt to ½ cup of boiling water. Put this combination in your mouth, as hot as you can bear it. Then swish it around the problem area. You can also gargle with Listerine Antiseptic, as this has been known to bring relief as well.Another home remedy is to pour a few drops of vanilla extract on the tooth, as this has been known to ease the pain. You can even crush a clove of fresh garlic and mix it with peanut butter and apply this to the tooth. Does this sound disgusting? Maybe – but it has been known to help. Chewing on ice on the side of the mouth in pain will help as well.If the above remedies work only temporarily, a sure fire remedy is to visit your dentist. In the line of prevention, the dental community recommends brushing twice daily, flossing at least once a day, and making an appointment for a dental cleaning every six months.

Latest Dental News: Smoking and Your Oral Health
Typically, oral cancer has been associated with tobacco and alcohol use; however, people who don’t smoke or drink excessively are also susceptible. Men are twice as likely as women to get oral cancer; in fact, an estimated 19,000 men are diagnosed with oral cancer each year. Adding to this, research suggests that men who have been diagnosed with the human papillomavirus (HPV) are at a higher risk for getting oral cancer. Oral cancer is a serious illness, and its treatment and diagnosis deserve serious attention.
Because there is currently no cure for HPV, many in the medical community are now promoting the vaccine Gardasil to prevent the acquisition of the sexually transmitted disease (and, by extension, oral cancer) in men and boys. Although Gardasil may help address the problem, it is critical that men receive proper dental care to help screen for oral cancer.
Oral Screenings:
As with other types of cancer, early detection is critical in beating oral cancer. Fortunately, breakthroughs in technology allow for faster and more accurate detection of suspicious tissue than ever before.
Good oral screenings includes the following:
- Regular check-ups – During a routine examination, your dentist will inspect your mouth for lesions, discolorations, or other abnormalities.
- Adjunctive screening – Today, many dentists use technology such as ViziLite Plus to better detect soft tissue abnormalities. During an adjunctive screening, your dentist will dim the lights and use a special light to inspect the inside of your mouth. These screenings are completely painless, and they can alert your dentist to abnormalities that might not be readily visible to the naked eye.
What to Watch For:
During your appointment, you might learn what warning signs to look for at home; by empowering patients to self-examine, dentists help ensure that oral cancer is caught early.
If you notice any of the following, call a dentist right away:
- White, red, or otherwise discolored spots in the mouth
- Sores in or around the mouth that do not heal
- Excessive and repeated bleeding in the mouth
- Pain or numbness in the mouth area
The key to successfully fighting oral cancer is early diagnosis. All adults - especially those in high-risk groups - should be sure to visit the dentist regularly and be aware of potential warning signs.

Latest Dental News: Home Tray Teeth WhiteningThere was a time when if you wanted whiter teeth, it seemed that the only option was to go to the dentist and have the teeth bleached. Now there are numerous tooth whitening products on the market that you can use at home. But both of these options involve using potentially dangerous chemicals, and they can even make teeth very sensitive, replacing one problem with another more serious one.But there is good news. There are many ways in which we can brighten our teeth naturally. By using some preventive measures and making treatments out of herbs and things we can find around the house or at the grocery store, we can make our pearly whites whiter. Here are the tips:- As always, brushing and flossing regularly is the most important thing we can do for our teeth. It helps prevent cavities and fight plaque and tartar, and it also reduces staining. Brush after every meal if possible. If you don't have a toothbrush handy, rinsing your mouth well is better than nothing.
- Avoid using too much fluoride. Although fluoride is included in toothpastes and water supplies, too much of it can discolor your teeth.
- Avoid tobacco use, and go easy on the coffee and tea. These are three of the most common culprits of tooth staining.
- Cola, wine, and even certain fruits and vegetables can also stain teeth. That doesn't mean we have to stop eating fruits and vegetables, just that we should take special care to brush well after eating some of them.
- Some fruits are excellent tooth whiteners. Strawberries, for example, can be rubbed directly on teeth or mashed up and brushed on. The inside of an orange peel is also great for whitening. You can rub it directly on your teeth, or make a paste of dried orange peel and ground bay leaves to brush on. A mixture of lemon juice and salt also works well.
- Use baking soda. Many of the toothpastes on the market include baking soda in their ingredients because it is so effective. But you don't have to buy special toothpaste. You can mix baking soda with a dash of salt and add a little vinegar to make a homemade tooth whitener.
- Take care when choosing a mouthwash. Most have alcohol in them, and some even have ingredients such as chlorhexidine that can discolor teeth. Herbal antibacterial mouthwashes are available that kill germs and freshen breath without harmful chemicals.
- Whitening your teeth does not have to be expensive, and you don't have to use harsh chemicals. By using preventive measures and natural remedies, you can make your smile brighter without harming your teeth in other ways.

Latest Dental News: All about Cosmetic DentistryGeneral dentistry and Professional dental practitioners are referred to as dentists. General dentistry involves the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide variety of conditions, disorders and diseases that affect your teeth, gums and jaw. General dentists also provide services related to the general maintenance of your tooth health and overall oral hygiene.Dentistry is ideally thought to be a means of preventative care. You should visit the dentist regularly, at least once every six months, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). With routine checkups, you can help ensure your oral health and functionality of your teeth, gums and joints. By staying on top of your oral hygiene, you can also prevent the development of significant dental problems that require extensive and expensive treatment. Neuromuscular dentistryWhile general dentistry focuses on the teeth and joints, while neuromuscular dentistry also takes into consideration your nerves, muscles and the proper position of your jaw.Neuromuscular dentistry recognizes that your teeth, mouth and jaw joints, muscles, and nerves all work together to properly align you jaw. If any of these elements fail to uphold their role, the result will be a misaligned or “bad bite” called a malocclusion.A malocclusion can result in a series of problems such as:- Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ/TMD)
- Tooth grinding, resulting in loose and damaged teeth
- Significant pain
- Damaged and failed dental restorations
- Pain in your face, neck, back, shoulders and/or arms
- Migraines
- Ringing in your ears
- Vertigo
An emerging field of dentistry, neuromuscular dentistry uses your ideal bite position to restore your body’s structural and postural balance. Together, these methods can help allevaite the above problems. This field of dentistry can also significantly improve posture throughout your entire skeletal structure, thereby solving lifelong, chronic pain for some patients.Cosmetic DentistryCosmetic dentistry goes a step beyond general dentistry. Besides focusing on your optimum oral health, cosmetic dentistry adds an element of art to enhance the appearance of your smile.Because cosmetic dentistry involves the same functional requirements as general dentistry, the cosmetic dentist must ensure these are accomplished before aesthetic treatments can begin. Therefore, dentists who practice cosmetic dentistry have the knowledge of general dentistry and a passion for the appearance of a durable, functional and beautiful smile. With a vast number of technological advancements in the field of cosmetic dentistry, these dentists must be able to use breakthrough restorative techniques and materials with ease. Because of this, cosmetic dentists must undergo a significant amount of extra training.Which dentist to see? Many people assume that they can visit their family dentist for a new smile, or to alleviate the pain caused by TMD. But, unfortunately, cosmetic and neuromuscular dentistry are not generally taught in dental schools as part of the normal curriculum.A dentist can graduate from most dental schools and pass the board exams without any knowledge of aesthetics or the ins and outs of your jaw-to-skull relationship. If you are looking to enhance the appearance of your smile, or relieve pain from a TMD-caused migraine, you should research the appropriate specialist in your area. Latest Dental News: Bad dental diet also harmful for the entire body: An expert
Diabetes can lead to many complications, some of them very severe. This means that the effect that diabetes has on your teeth can often be completely overlooked. Diabetics are at a higher risk for periodontal disease (diseases of the mouth) than most people.Having high blood sugar means that your teeth and gums are at a higher risk, because germs multiply in high-sugar environments. This means that the first step to protecting your teeth is to lower your blood sugar and to maintain a constant blood sugar level. The difficulty is that if you already have some gum disease, it can be another stress that leads to high blood sugar levels. This can be an overwhelming cycle, but luckily you can stop it.Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. It is present when your gums are puffy and red, and your gums can bleed when you brush your teeth or use other dental care. Gum disease, although little more than a painful inconvenience, can progress until you lose your teeth. This makes it even more difficult to maintain a healthy diet needed by diabetics. The first step to taking care of your oral health is to monitor and control your blood sugar. You will also want to tell your dentist that you have diabetes. Your dentist will be able to help you notice the initial signs of gingivitis, which can be hard to distinguish. Visiting the dentist two times a year is a good idea.Oral hygiene, like we all know, begins with brushing your teeth regularly, particularly after sweet snacks and desserts. You can also take care of your mouth by watching what you put in your mouth: chewing sugar-free gum can also help reduce your risk of gum disease. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water, to maintain a healthy saliva flow in your mouth. Smoking is a bad habit that, among other diseases, will promote gum disease. Quit smoking immediately, because it has terrible effects on most diabetic complications.Of course, brushing our teeth is not quite enough. Flossing daily should become part of your routine. Some dentists recommend using a water-pik to clean your teeth as well. Ask your dentist about what would be best for you. Certain mouthwashes are clinically proven to help prevent gingivitis: the simple 10 second act of gargling could save your teeth for the future!Preventing gum disease is about taking care of yourself now to avoid pain in the future. Gum disease can lead to hyperglycemia, or even acidosis in severe cases. You want to avoid these symptoms, because they will make it even harder for you to control your blood sugar later. Remember: if you maintain a healthy diet, good oral hygiene, and helpful habits, you will save yourself time, money, and pain. You can have and keep the perfect smile!Source: Diabetes, your Teeth, and GumsPrevious Posts:All About Dental Crowns: When & for WhomSecret Way For Teeth Straightening & Teeth AlignmentDentists in Portobello: Cosmetic Dentist in Dublin, IrelandAll About CEREC Restorations & Dental CrownsDifference Between Porcelain Veneers & Teeth Whitening
Latest Dental News: Vaccum Formed Retainer
Porcelain veneers are custom-crafted shells of ceramic material applied over the front surface of a tooth. They cover worn enamel, uneven alignment or sizing, minor chips and cracks, and small gaps.
The bright, white, beautifully aligned smile that can be achieved with porcelain veneers has made the procedure very popular, particularly since today’s advanced materials offer high quality porcelain which gives a natural look.
Tooth whitening is also a popular option, as you can tell by looking at all the tooth-whitening products available in stores. A professional whitening procedure will give you more consistent and dramatic results than any of those products. You can have it done in the cosmetic dentist’s office in a little over an hour. Or you can take home a professional do-it-yourself kit. Both methods give equally excellent results.
Are Veneers and Whitening Mutually Exclusive?
No. You can do both procedures. Veneers are placed only on front teeth. If you had veneers done and left the rest of your teeth to become yellow and stained, your mouth would be multicolored and your dental beauty reduced. Side teeth and even back teeth become visible when you laugh or yawn, even if they are not visible when you smile.
For individuals who experience mild tooth discoloration, over-the-counter teeth whitening may be an effective, although temporary, option. When discoloration is more severe, in-office laser whitening, which uses a higher concentration of peroxide, is more effective and long lasting. Those with severely dull, discolored, chipped or misaligned teeth find that porcelain veneers are the best solution overall, since tooth whitening can only solve the issue of discoloration.
Veneers offer additional benefits over tooth whitening, including long-lasting results, durability, and enhancement of the facial structure of older individuals who may have a sunken facial appearance due to dental issues. Teeth whitening is a simple process taking less than an hour to complete. Veneers require a greater commitment of time and cost, but are well worth it for those individuals who are good candidates for the procedure. Most cosmetic dentists offer affordable financing to suit a variety of budgets.

Latest Dental News: Smoking and Your Oral HealthMany people have discolored teeth and it makes then very self-conscious about their smile. While slight discoloration is expected as we age, there are some things that can speed up the darkening of our teeth:• Due to the extremely high acid content in soft drinks, the deterioration of the enamel on your teeth is sped up.• Drinking red wine, coffee and tea. Any dark liquids have the potential to stain your teeth. Heat from tea and coffee causes are small fractures in your tooth enamel.• Using tobacco products. Smoking will cause a yellowish build up on the teeth. These kinds of stains are typically more difficult to remove and will take longer to lighten using whitening treatments.• Certain medications. The two most common medications that have been shown to darken teeth are tetracycline and minocycline.• Too much fluoride, whether it be water or different fluoride based products. Fluoride discoloration typically happens during the development stage of the tooth.• Any sort of of trauma to your teeth can lead to a discoloration. This happens because there is a tiny hemorrhage inside the tooth and the blood that is forced in there will make the tooth appear darker.Over-the-Counter Tooth WhiteningThere are many tooth whitening products available on the market today. However, they may not be effective or even damage your teeth. Products that may whiten your teeth include:• Chewing gum doesn’t have much of a bleaching agent, so whitening results are very minor. However, activating the saliva may help some.• Whitening toothpastes should only be used in moderation due to the abrasives they contain. Long use of those abrasive materials will actually wear down the tooth enamel.• At-home tooth bleaching kits can provide decent results, but they can be difficult and messy to use. Also, since they typically don’t provide dental dams, ingestion of the bleach could upset people’s stomachs.Professional Teeth WhiteningWhile any of the products above have the capability of providing results, but professional bleaching services are a better choice because:• The bleaching agents are much stronger in the professional products which will lead to faster and better results.• They are safer to use because your dentist will use the proper methods to ensure you don’t ingest the bleach, unlike over-the-counter products.• Your dentist can assess you condition and your expectations and help you make the right procedure for your needs.Dental Bonding and Porcelain VeneersIf your staining is too severe, it is important to realize that tooth bleaching might not give you the results you desire. However, there are still a couple options to gaining the beautiful, white smile you’ve always wanted:• Tooth bonding• Porcelain veneersDental bonding is a procedure in which a type of resin is sculpted and adhered to your teeth. This product is extremely strong and durable and it is indistinguishable from your natural tooth enamel. This resin is essentially replacing the enamel on your tooth, which will hide stubborn stains. Tooth bonding is quick and can typically be completed in one office visit.Porcelain veneers are another option to hide stubborn stains. The veneers are very thin layers of porcelain that are affixed to the tooth. Your natural tooth is carefully filed down in order for the veneers to properly adhere to the tooth. This option will take slightly longer and involve a couple of trips to the office.

Latest Dental News: NHS V/S Private Dentistry: Cost, Treatment Options & MaterialsPorcelain veneers are an excellent solution for people with discolored crooked, gapped, worn, or cracked teeth. In fact, in many ways porcelain veneers are the flagship cosmetic dental treatment because they can essentially give a person a whole new smile all at once. In addition, porcelain veneers can be a great protective treatment for your teeth.Decay Resistant:
Unlike tooth enamel, the ceramic laminate used to make porcelain veneers neither decays as a result of exposure to the acid byproducts of mouth-dwelling bacteria or stains as a result of exposure to melanoidins found in foods like coffee, black tea, chocolate, and red wine. This means that porcelain veneers can not only give you a great-looking smile, they can give you a smile that lasts. In addition, they can strengthen your teeth by providing an additional layer of support, almost like the layered composite armor used on modern main battle tanks. However, the teeth behind the veneers are still susceptible to decay, and there are some special considerations you should keep in mind about cavities in veneered teeth.Behind the Veneer:
The veneer itself is made of pressed laminate ceramic, which is very strong, and the veneer is attached to the tooth by means of a plastic compound sometimes called cement. Before the veneers are placed or crafted, the teeth are prepared to receive them through the removal of dental enamel. The amount of enamel removed varies, both according to the preferences and the technique of the dentist doing the preparation, and it is unlikely to be completely uniform. Normally, the amount removed is between 0.3 and 0.5 mm, often leaving little to no enamel on the prepared surface. Fortunately, the prepared surface is protected by the veneer.Possible Dangers:
Cavities can still attack veneered teeth. If veneers are placed by an inexperienced or unskilled dentist, there may be ledges, shelves, or other harborages around the edges of the veneers where food can accumulate and bacteria hide from cleanings. In these locations, plaque can build up, and the acid produced by the bacteria can lead to decay around the edges of the veneers. If undetected, these edge cavities can grow and allow bacteria access to the tooth pulp, necessitating a root canal and capping the tooth with a dental crown.People often think porcelain veneers are likely to chip, but in fact it is much more likely that the compound bonding the veneer to the tooth will fail and the veneer come loose. This becomes more likely if a person consumes a great deal of alcohol, which dissolves some bonding compounds. Worse than an actual separation of the veneer is if some of the bond gets dissolved and creates a void behind the veneer which can again serve as a harborage for bacteria, leading to concealed decay that attacks the tooth and may not be detected until pain begins.Prevention Better than Cure:
As with all dental treatment, prevention is the best approach. With proper care, you can protect your veneered teeth from any of the negative effects we've discussed above. First, make sure you have chosen a talented and well-trained cosmetic dentist who uses the highest-quality restorations. Veneers that are properly shaped and placed can remove the possibility of harborages around the veneers. Brush and floss your teeth according to your dentist's instructions. Make all your semi-annual cleaning and follow-up appointments to catch any decay before it progresses to the level of a serious threat. Limit alcohol consumption and clean your teeth immediately after vomiting to reduce the dissolution of the dental bonding material. If you do all this, your veneers will last a decade or more protecting your teeth and keeping them stain-free.Source: Porcelain Veneers and CavitiesPrevious Posts:Quick & Easy Teeth Whitening Treatments For Perfect SmileWest Los Angeles Dentist Rejuvenates Smiles with Painless LumineersCosmetic Dentistry in Devenshire Street, London W1Causes & Solutions For Stained Teeth And Chipped ToothLatest & Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments Eliminated Dental Fear

Sleep apnea is a chronic condition that disrupts sleep by frequent pauses in breathing. This is a dangerous condition that affects millions of Americans, many of which are unaware that they have it. These pauses in breathing occur 5-30 times during one hour of sleep. This happens because the soft tissue in the back of throat may collapse and block the air passages stopping the flow of breathing.
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea:
• Snoring
• Episodes of stopped breathing
• Frequent daytime sleepiness
• Increased difficulty remembering and concentrating
Sleep Apnea Treatments
There are many treatments for sleep apnea. Mild cases of this condition can be treated simply by sleeping on the side instead of the back, reducing the intake of alcohol, or quitting smoking. Some cases, however, are more serious and demand a treatment known as nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). CPAP uses a mask that is worn all night to help open the airways. This mask is attached to a machine that regulates airflow. This treatment may be difficult and uncomfortable to sleep in.
Many sufferers of sleep apnea stop CPAP treatment after the first night or the first week of use. CPAP is difficult for people to use if they travel often or enjoy camping. Surgery is another option for treatment, but many people do not wish to choose that route.
For the people who have a major case of sleep apnea, they may choose the DNA appliance. This appliance gently guides the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), airways, and teeth into the proper position without the use of continuous force that accompanies traditional braces. Once the mouth is aligned correctly, snoring is reduced as well as many other forms of sleep-disordered breathing, including sleep apnea. The DNA appliance helps the functions for sleep and breathing letting the once sleep apnea sufferer have a great night’s sleep.
The DNA appliance uses specially made springs that require little to no adjustment from a dental professional. This appliance is worn mainly at night and naturally moves the teeth into the correct position. Not only does this appliance correct misaligned teeth, but it also corrects misaligned jaws that may cause many TMJ disorders.

Latest Dental News: Patients suffering from dry mouth take multiple medicationsAnyone who has ever suffered from a toothache knows how painful it can be. In the line of prevention, the dental community recommends brushing twice daily, flossing at least once a day, and making an appointment for a dental cleaning every six months.Source: Toothache Remedy - A Pain In The MouthPrevious Posts:Healthy Teeth & Gums Gives You A Healthy SmileGet Sparkling White Teeth With Zoom Teeth WhiteningBright & Healthy Teeth Gives You A Perfect SmileDental Treatments At Cosmetic Dentistry Kent

The growing popularity of tooth whitening procedures in the United States has caused many companies to place tooth whitening products on the market. This has become so commonplace that consumers are bombarded by the many whitening options available. However, not all whitening systems are comparable to one another. Choosing the right system will lighten your smile by up to eight or ten shades and leave you with a beautiful, gleaming smile. Choosing the wrong system will lead to results that do not last very long and it may even irritate your gums.Professional vs. Over-the-Counter Tooth Whitening SystemsThe economy is struggling and many people have less money to spend on luxury items, including cosmetic improvements. Why not save some money by opting for a less expensive, over-the-counter tooth whitening system? The simple answer is you get what you pay for.Over-the-counter systems use generic trays that do not fit your mouth very well. As a result, the whitening gel may not apply evenly across your teeth. This may cause inconsistent results. Furthermore, the gel may get on your gums, causing irritation.Opting for a professional tooth whitening system administered by your cosmetic dentist will ensure that you receive the most effective treatment for your money.Zoom!® Tooth WhiteningThe Zoom!® tooth whitening system is one of the most effective professional tooth whitening systems available today. You can revitalize your smile in just one 90 minute visit to your cosmetic dentist. Zoom! can make your teeth up to 8 shades lighter from one treatment.Am I a Candidate for Zoom! Tooth Whitening?Just about all adults are candidates for Zoom! However, it is important to consult your cosmetic dentist first to make sure Zoom! is right for you. Factors such as your overall dental health, lifestyle, and whitening goals will affect this decision. If you are looking for an easy way to remove stains on your teeth and brighten your smile, then Zoom! is most likely a good option for you. However, it is important to go into the procedure with reasonable expectations. Zoom! is a whitening agent, not a miracle cure.Zoom! may not be right for you if:• You expect predictable results – outcomes vary based on each patient’s unique oral qualities.• You are looking for a permanent fix – your teeth will eventually become stained again; however, your treatment should last several years.• You have sensitive gums – the bleaching process may cause gum irritation in some patients.Zoom! ProcessZoom! tooth whitening systems employ a hydrogen peroxide-based gel to lighten your teeth. A protective covering will be applied to your lips and gums in order to prevent irritation. Your cosmetic dentist will then apply the whitening gel to your teeth and use a special laser light to activate the whitening agent in the gel. After three 20 minute applications, your treatment will be complete. With prep time, your entire whitening session will be wrapped up in about an hour and a half. You can dazzle your coworkers with your new smile after receiving treatment on your lunch break.Source: Make your Smile Sparkle with Zoom!® Tooth WhiteningPrevious Posts:Bright & Healthy Teeth Gives You A Perfect SmileGet A Perfect Bright Smile With Teeth WhiteningWhat is cosmetic dentistry?Wolverhampton Dentist & Dental SpecialistsDental Treatments by Dudley Dentistshttp://www.viddler.com/explore/Aileen/
